In the Blink of an Eye

In the Blink of an Eye brings together works created in response to Plural Kinships by Raisa Kabir and Fadhel Mourali. Through engaging with the exhibition during a series of gallery visits and discussion sessions, students of City of Portsmouth College have developed new works that centre on themes of heritage, identity, and place.

Inspired by the diversity of personal and cultural histories explored by both Kabir and Mourali, the group turns inward, reflecting on their own lived experiences and understandings of personal identity. This exhibition offers insight into how through creative practice, this group of emerging artists translate their identities. Whether by weaving archival photographs, re-appropriating found materials, or delicately painting fond memories, this range of approaches brings together elements of the present with traditions from the past.

Together, these works form a collective reflection on belonging and connection. By responding to the practices of Kabir and Mourali, the students position their own voices within a wider dialogue of kinship, culture, and memory. The exhibition is a space where personal narratives intersect, revealing how identity is shaped not only by where we come from, but by how and what we choose to carry forward.

In the Blink of an Eye reflects the fleeting moments through which identity, memory, and heritage are formed and remembered. It speaks to how quickly experiences can pass, yet leave lasting impressions that shape who we are. Within this exhibition, brief moments, memories, and inherited stories are transformed into new visual narratives.
