Aspex Portsmouth

Dynamis, Electronic Sound Sculpture Building Workshop

Facilitated by Artist-In-Residence Boris Allenou, this workshop invites participants to collaborate to create small-scale electronic sound sculptures from repurposed motorised items, resulting in a collective artwork that will be exhibited at Aspex Portsmouth alongside the main gallery exhibition CLASSifications.

Using discarded electronics (such as DVD players, old printers, Walkmans), microcontrollers, motor drivers, and everyday materials, attendees will explore unconventional sound creation by combining circuitry, sensors, movement, vibrations, and more.

Participants will learn:

  • How to find motors in discarded items and safely disconnect them
  • The basics of electronic principles, components, and soldering
  • How to control motors using Arduino boards and motor drivers
  • Coding in the Arduino IDE – How to creatively apply this knowledge to animate objects and create sound sculptures
  • How to plan and prepare sound sculptures for exhibition alongside the upcoming Aspex exhibition CLASSification

This workshop is directly Inspired by sound artists like Rie Nakajima, Pierre Berthet, Frederic Le Junter, Matthew Steinke, and Boris Allenou’s Dynamis project.
