Aspex Portsmouth

After School Club

The After School Club was a weekly programme, which ran for 17 weeks throughout Winter 2021/22 with Year 6 pupils from St. George’s Primary School in Portsea.

The pupils were supported by Artist Educator Linda Mason to explore a variety of creative skills and complete their Arts Award Discover. They also created an exhibition of work, which was displayed in the Aspex Learning Space from 3 November to 23 December, in response to Constellation’ by Platform Graduate award 2021 artist Sophie Bazgier. Sophie’s work expresses emotion through mark making, as wild lines dance on the surface of the paper and take the form of a constellation, like the milky way. In 6 collaborative works, the pupils used multiple mediums to create their own constellations. With each young artist making a shared contribution, the works expressed their own emotions as a group.

Pupil’s comments on their exhibition:

First we were practicing with different lids and making circles. We used chalk and paint, it was cool because we didn’t do lots of shapes, we only did one so it looks good. We used team work! I scribbled with circles and then smudged it with my hands to make it blurry to get the colour – Ayhan

I liked printing with the lids – Lilly

Like it or not – I like it! – David
