Crosswise Collection, Fiona Ross, Candy Coated Accessories

This exhibition showcases the work of experienced textile designer Fiona Ross.

After completing a degree in Constructed Textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2003, Candy Coated Accessories was founded to give textile designer Fiona Ross a productive outlet for her skills in textile design. While developing her business Fiona also gained professional experience working at Johnstons of Elgin cashmere mill as an accessory designer. For the next seven years she worked with many high-end clients and brands. Looking for a change in pace she then became the merchandise buyer and designer at BrewDog Brewery. The contrast between a traditional working environment and a very modern fast paced business gave Fiona the experience and confidence to take Candy Coated Accessories to the next level.

Working from her home studio in the north east of Scotland, Fiona utilises both her traditional skills in knitting and sewing to develop a modern and vibrant textile collection. These range from reversible jacquard knitted scarves, pom pom beanies, patterned hats, stylish twist headbands, eco-friendly craft kits and so much more. Bright colours and geometric patterns are Fiona’s inspiration which is reflected in her work.

All knitted products are made using 100% Lambswool that is processed and spun in the UK. Lambswool is the first shearing of a lamb 50mm or below and the first shearing usually takes place when the lamb is roughly 7 months old.

Lambswool is the highest quality of sheep’s wool that can be found. It’s finer and therefore needs less processing. As the wool is so soft and lightweight it is much more elasticated than other sheep’s wool which gives it an insulation effect. This insulation is created by a crimp in the fibres of the fabric that allows air pockets to form together leading to increased insulation. The material can be soft and warm whilst also being breathable and regulating heat. The outside of the product is also harder after weaving which helps repel water. Another benefit of Lambswool is that it’s also hypoallergenic and is therefore an ideal choice for those with asthma or who suffer from common allergies.
