On Friday 29 April, the Aspex team were delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth to their historic building in Gunwharf Quays.
Councillor Frank Jonas visited the gallery Friday morning to meet the participants of ‘Generate’, a weekly art group for people with dementia.
Artist Laura Fazackerley, who leads the sessions, said: “The group enjoyed meeting such an important figure within Portsmouth, and it was great for him to see the work they produce”.
As well as observing the group’s artistic efforts, the Lord Mayor had the opportunity to chat to the carers of the participants.
This visit coincides with building renovations taking place at the gallery, a result of a successful capital bid from Arts Council England, and further funding from the Foyle Foundation.
The ‘Generate’ group will eventually take place in the new Participation Space, a larger room customised for activities and events.
Director of Aspex, Joanne Bushnell said It was fantastic to welcome the Lord Mayor, Councillor Jonas to Aspex, show him the progress of our building project and discuss how these renovations will help to inspire more visitors to be creative".
Building work concludes in late May, which will see the return of Aspex’s partners Lily & Lime LD to their Café Space.
