How to speak Proper Pompey | Havant & South Downs College
How to speak Proper Pompey is a project that has researched the origins and influence of the Portsmouth accent and dialect.
Supported by a grant from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, students from Havant and South Downs College have been working with production company Millstream Productions to research, write and produce a documentary film focusing on the way the language of Portsmouth impacts the lives of people in the city and beyond.
The students have also been collaborating with visual artists Heinrich and Palmer to produce an interactive installation that gives visitors the opportunity to experience what it is to speak like a Portsmouthian.
The project has seen the students visit the British Library in London, Portsmouth History Centre and the Royal Naval Dockyards to investigate the influence of the navy on the way people in the city speak.
Project co-ordinator Steve Murray said:
“The project has given students the opportunity to work on a real-world project with industry professionals and find out more about the way the accent and dialect of Portsmouth has developed. The documentary film they have shot is visually appealing and engaging and they should be proud of the work they have produced.”
