Journeys Festival International: Look Up

Journeys Festival International: Look Up

19 Oct - 29 Nov

Journeys Festival International, in collaboration with Aspex,  introduces new work from Portsmouth based artists, Natalia Michalska and Majid Dhana.

Over the past two months, Dhana and Michalska have worked with members of the Portsmouth refugee community to formulate a series of creative portraits, installed across the city’s skyline for the duration of the festival.

These vibrant portraits depict refugees and asylum seekers, incorporating their favourite Portsmouth landmarks, as well as original poetry created with participants of collaborative workshops. The works were created whilst the artists undertook a residency at Aspex (click here to read more).

Part of Journeys Festival International, Look Up is an outdoor exhibition installed on the exterior of prominent buildings around the city. Look Up provides a unique opportunity for artists engaging with refugee and asylum seeker themes to have their work shown in one of the most visible strands of Journeys Festival International.

You can find this exhibition in our Learning Space.

Journeys Festival International, Portsmouth takes place from 19 - 29 October 2017.

About the artists

Majid Dhana

Zimbabwean artist and poet Majid Dhana has worked with the British Red Cross in Portsmouth for nearly four years, supporting and building relationships with the refugee and asylum seeker community. Dhana enables their stories to be heard through spoken word poetry. Working with support groups like the Young Refugee Project, Dhana has developed an artistic practice that puts the struggles and strengths of these communities at its core.

Natalia Michalska

Originally from Poland, Natalia Michalska worked to develop her artistic practice in Munich, before settling in Portsmouth in 2014. Since then Michalska has worked with many of the area’s most vibrant cultural institutions including Aspex, University of Portsmouth, and Live Art Local.
