Every Saturday Aspex hosts a free drop-in workshop for all the family!

Each of these unique workshops take place in our new Learning Space, led by local illustrator Jordan Baines.

Past activities include monster-making, bookbinding and printmaking! 

Family Saturdays takes place from 11am - 1pm and no prior booking is required.

Workshop description

Saturday 14 January

Another crafty session celebrating our new #FamilySaturdays exhibition – can you spot yourself in the photos?

Saturday 21 January

The Ministry of Books: This session is all about creating books and challenging the traditional concept of what a book can be. Jordan will demonstrate how to construct various styles of books using limited materials. Then we'll constructing our own books and fill them with drawings and artwork!

Saturday 28 January

35 & Counting: This session is inspired by exhibiting maker/designer Malene Hartmann Rasmussen, looking at her fairytale-inspired artwork. We will be creating our very own 2D & 3D 'Spiders from Mars'. Our Arts Award booklets will be available to complete also.

Saturday 4 February

It’s the year of the rooster! We’ll be celebrating Chinese New Year with the rest of our friends at Gunwharf Quays, creating some very special decorations!

Saturday 11 February

With Valentines Day just around the corner, we’ll be doing special paper-craft – a perfect gift for a loved one!

Saturday 18 February

35 & Counting: Inspired by another of our exhibiting artists, David Blandy, we will be creating motion and movement through mark making, using a wide variety of weird and wonderful materials!

Saturday 25 February

35 & Counting: Neal Layton is an award winning, Portsmouth based children’s illustrator and author. We'll be making our very own illustrations inspired by Layton, which Jordan will make into a group book (for collection later in the week).

(All workshops are suitable for the whole family - parents will be encouraged to get involved!)
