Artist Talk, Jessica Wetherly
Join artist Jessica Wetherly for a free talk on Sunday 31 July, 2–3:30pm as she discusses our latest exhibition Sink or Float: An Artificial Island and how she developed ideas for the project during research visits to Portsea Island, Farlington Marshes and Portsdown Hill.
The exhibition brings together the artist’s research into the rich ecologies surrounding Portsea Island and the damage caused to them by human activity. Following the invitation to present a solo show at Aspex, Wetherly has spent time with local scientists and ecologists to gain an insight into the urgent issues threatening the vast, flat stretches of marshland, mudflats and seagrass meadows surrounding Portsmouth.
Throughout her practice Wetherly considers the fragility of landscapes, constructing new mythologies that unveil the deception and disruption of human interventions within ecosystems.
