Aspex Portsmouth

Generate

Aspex has been running Generate – a free, inclusive art workshop for people with dementia – since 2015.

Providing a comfortable space to explore art, Generate takes place every Friday in our Learning Space. The sessions are led by artists Roy Eneas and Abi Wheeler, who support the participants to follow their own creative interests and find the techniques, materials and subject matter that inspires them.

Many of our participants join us with no arts background and those who do have some experience may not have painted or sketched for a long time. Over the years, we have seen how quickly people can develop their skills, gaining confidence and enjoyment through arts activities.

If you’d like to find out more about the group and how to join, please contact us at info@aspex.org.uk or on 02392 778080.

Alongside the workshops, we also support a self-run carers group, who meet in our cafe. This provides an opportunity to talk and connect with other carers in the area. If you’d like to buy one of our carers a coffee, please click here to make a donation.

Case Study

We have put together a case study sharing the experiences of Generate participants, Rob and Jo. You can find out more about their experiences by reading the case study here

Resource for Carers

In response to Covid-19, we developed an educational resource, which we hope will support carers in feeling confident to instigate arts activities with those they are caring for. It provides really simple practical advice and ideas of activities which you can adapt and try at home. Click here to download ‘Getting started with art: A resource for carers of people with dementia’ (PDF), or request a paper copy at the gallery.

Generate is supported by Portsmouth City Council Reconnecting Communities Fund.
