Aspex Portsmouth

Flora Duley

Flora Duley’s sculptural practice includes social interaction, dialogue and performativity. Looking at sculpture as a social context, the work becomes a tool for interrelation, bringing in the everyday, using collective moments in social ways to set up situations that are playful, communal and experimental. This theatrical, playful approach is in turn mirrored in the visual language of her sculptures, emphasising touch, texture and colour in the yoga bricks, neon balls, bats, stretch bands and other equipment.

Flora has been commissioned to create a new public artwork for Southsea’s seafront, developed through a series of engagement workshops with local community groups. This commission is part of Portsmouth City Council’s Navigate programme, supported by Arts Council England.

During her residency at Aspex, Flora will explore the theme of ‘Play’ in Portsmouth – diving into local archives, inviting visitors to take part in playful activities in the gallery, and experimenting with materials to test colour, flexibility and durability.

She’ll also be leading creative activities at community events across the city in collaboration with Aspex over the summer. All of these explorations will help shape the development of the final public artwork.
