The Shape of a Spell, Preview
Join us at Aspex Portsmouth for the preview of The Shape of a Spell, the annual Platform Graduate Award exhibition celebrating the next generation of emerging artists from across the South Coast.
About the exhibition
Part of the Platform Graduate Award programme, The Shape of a Spell brings together artists who transform landscapes, materials, memories and lived experiences into alternative ways of seeing. Through painting, sculpture, photography, film, textiles and illustration, the exhibition explores the familiar and uncanny, the personal and more-than-human, creating imagined worlds rooted in folklore, memory, local histories and deep time.
Across the works, making becomes a kind of spell: a way to preserve, transform and reimagine the world. The artists create personal mythologies and parallel realities that offer moments of wonder, escapism and reflection, inviting us to slow down and consider what might exist alongside the reality we know.

Artist networking
From 5.30pm, we invite artists and art workers to arrive early for an additional half-hour of networking before the main preview begins.
This is an opportunity to meet the Platform artists, connect with friends and peers, make new creative connections and learn more about Aspex and our programme.

Accessibility
The exhibition is located in our Main Gallery on the ground floor, with step-free access. Large-print exhibition texts will be available at the gallery entrance.
